Second PC setup: DMA driver and speed test

How to connect your DMA card to your second computer, install the data driver from MewTools, and run a speed test, all before any software goes on.

Your Second Computer covers what the machine itself needs, so start there if you haven't picked one yet.

Before you start

The second computer runs Windows and is on the same desk as your main PC
It has a free USB 3 port on the back
The card is in your main PC, and your main PC is on (in the BIOS if the card isn't flashed yet)
You have the USB cable that came with the card
You have a way to see this machine: its own screen, a KVM, or a fuser

Card not flashed yet? Leave the cable on the JTAG port, install MewTools below, and flash your firmware first. That guide moves the cable to the data port at the end. Until it's flashed, DO NOT boot the main PC into Windows with the card plugged in. If that already happened, the fix is reinstalling Windows on the main PC.

Where the cable goes: while flashing, the card's JTAG port goes to the second computer with the main PC in the BIOS. After the flash, the same cable moves to the DATA port

Plug the card in

The card says which port is data and which is JTAG. If yours aren't labeled, data is the one furthest from the gold strip. JTAG is only for flashing.

Hubs and long cables cause dropouts. Ports and cables has the rest.

Install the driver

Get MewTools, our free tool: download it from GitHub. Run it on this second computer only, never on your main PC. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator, or the driver buttons won't work. If Windows won't let it open, see MewTools blocked by Windows.
Open Drivers & Flashing and press Install DATA Driver (FTDI FTD3XX).
Check Device Manager.
With the cable on the data port, FTDI FT601 USB 3.0 Bridge Device should be listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers with no warning triangle. While the cable is still on JTAG it won't be there, which is normal. Moving the cable between the JTAG and data ports with the main PC on is safe, and nothing changes on the main PC.

Which driver, when

Every driver here goes on the second computer. Nothing gets installed on the main PC.

The JTAG driver goes in first, for your DNA ID and the flash. The data driver goes in once the card is flashed and the cable moves to the data port. Use the buttons in MewTools instead of waiting for Windows to find a driver.

Test the link

Before the speed test, your firmware has to be on the card and the main PC restarted properly into Windows with the cable on the data port. If you were given a key, activate it too. Then open Speed Test in MewTools and run it. What a good and a bad result look like is in Flashing your firmware. A bad one is nearly always the cable or the port, so try the supplied cable in a different rear USB 3 port.

Then the software
