[FAIL] VMM INIT FAILED. What it means and the fix

"[FAIL] VMM INIT FAILED." means the software on your second PC couldn't start reading your main PC's memory. Some tools say "[CORE] Initialization Failed" for the same thing. Most of the time it's a card that got stuck after a restart or sleep, or a card that hasn't been activated.

Look above it in the log first

VMM INIT FAILED is the last line, not the cause. If a line above it says FPGA: TINY PCIe TLP Algorithm auto-selected!, the card can't read memory yet. Run the activator. That error has the steps.

How to fix it

Work down this list in order and test after each one.

• Cold boot the main PC.
  Shut it down, not restart. Unplug it at the back, hold the power button for 15 seconds, then start it. A normal restart or waking from sleep can leave the card stuck. Then run the activator again.
• Check the card came up.
  Its power and PCIe status lights should be on steady. On your second PC, Device Manager should show FTDI FT601 USB 3.0 Bridge Device under Universal Serial Bus controllers. If not, Unable to connect to USB/FT601 device is the closer match.
• The cable and the port.
  An unstable link can fail here as well as in the speed test. Use the cable from the box in a rear USB 3 port.
• The slot.
  A slot that shares lanes with a drive you use can give the card a bad link. Try another.
• Fast Boot off.
  In the BIOS, not the Windows Fast Startup option. It's the one setting that causes trouble with every build. Leave the rest alone. How to open your BIOS shows where it is on each brand.
• The slot's PCIe speed.
  In the BIOS, start at the fastest setting and step it down one at a time until the card works.
