In gaming, DMA means direct memory access. It's a normal PC feature that lets hardware read memory without going through the processor. When gamers say "DMA", they usually mean a DMA card: a PCIe card that reads a game's memory and sends it to a second computer.
DMA, the PC feature
Your PC moves a lot of data around. If the processor had to copy every byte itself, it would have no time for anything else. So devices like graphics cards, network cards and NVMe drives are allowed to read and write memory on their own. That's direct memory access, and every modern PC uses it all the time.
DMA in gaming
A DMA card uses that same feature on purpose. It goes in a PCIe slot in the PC you play on, reads the game's memory, and sends it down a USB cable to a second computer. The software on the second computer then shows you what it found, like where other players are.

Why people use DMA instead of normal cheats
A normal cheat runs on the same PC as the game, where the anti-cheat can look at it. With DMA, the software runs on a different computer, and the only thing on your main PC is a card. That's the whole idea. DMA vs software cheats explains what changes when you switch.
It doesn't make you invisible. Anti-cheats look for DMA cards too, and everything can and will be detected eventually, no matter what anyone says. Is DMA detectable? explains how they look.
Other things DMA can mean
If you searched "DMA" and landed here by mistake, you might want one of these:

The same direct memory access feature, but in microcontrollers and other chips.
Common questions
- What does DMA stand for?
Direct memory access. - Is DMA a cheat?
DMA itself is a normal PC feature. A DMA card used to read a game's memory is a cheating tool, and games ban for it. - What is a DMA card for?
Reading the memory of the PC you play on and sending it to a second computer. DMA card for gaming has the full guide. - Do I need two PCs for DMA?
Yes. The card sends its data to a second computer, where the software runs. Second PC for DMA. - What does DMA cost?
It depends on what you need. How much does a DMA setup cost? adds it up.
