How to record or stream with your DMA overlay showing

How to wire a capture card after your video fuser, so you can record or stream the game with your overlay on it, and what to check before you buy one.

To record or stream with your overlay showing, you need a video fuser and a capture card. The fuser's output already has the overlay on top of the game, so the capture card goes between the fuser and your monitor and your second PC records that picture.

Why recording on the main PC misses the overlay

Your software draws the overlay on the second PC, and the fuser puts it over the game on its way to your monitor. The overlay is never on the main PC, so recording there only gets the game. A capture card without a fuser has the same problem, because it only sends your main PC's picture into the second PC. Fuser or capture card explains the difference.

What you need

Wire it up

  1. Main PC and second PC into the fuser's inputs, the same as always
  2. The fuser's output into the capture card's input
  3. The capture card's passthrough output to your monitor
  4. The capture card's USB cable to that free rear USB 3 port on your second PC

Anything that streams all the time can cause stutters on the DMA card's group of ports, so keep the capture card on a different one. Give it a controller to itself has more.

Set the mode

The capture card is one more link in the chain, so the fuser can only run a mode the capture card passes through. Check the passthrough resolution and refresh rate on the capture card's spec sheet before you buy, and match it to the mode you play at. Wrong refresh rate or resolution goes through the other links.

On the 10th Gen models EDID passes through, so each computer sees your real monitor. With a capture card in between, whether they still see your monitor or the capture card is TBD. If modes you need go missing, use EDID mode and set the mode yourself on both computers.

Record on the second PC

Record or stream from the second PC with OBS or the capture card's own app. Keep an eye on its CPU while your DMA software runs, because a second PC stuck at 100% can't keep up with the card's reads. If your software starts to stutter while you record, lower the recording quality or close what you don't need, and Power settings on your second PC has the rest.

Whether the GODLIKE fusers pass your main PC's sound through is TBD, so check your recording has game sound before you go live. Sound has more on that.

If it still won't work, open a ticket in our Discord with your fuser model, your capture card and the mode you're trying.
