Failed to initialize DMA: what it means and the fix

Your DMA software can't open the card. Check the cable is on the data port, the FTDI driver, other programs using the card, then cold boot.

"Failed to initialize DMA" means your software can't open the card. It's the same family as Unable to connect to USB/FT601 device: the cable is on the wrong port, the data driver is missing, or another program has the card.

How to fix it

  • The cable is on JTAG.
Move it to the card's data port. JTAG is only for flashing.
  • The data driver.
In MewTools open Drivers & Flashing and press Install DATA Driver (FTDI FTD3XX). Check Device Manager shows FTDI FT601 USB 3.0 Bridge Device under Universal Serial Bus controllers, with no warning triangle. Restart the second PC after installing it.
  • Only one program at a time.
Close MewTools and any other DMA tool before you start your software.
  • Cold boot the main PC.
A card stuck after a restart or sleep can't be reached. Cold boot has the steps.
  • Then run the activator before you open your software again.

If your software won't open or log in at all, that's a different problem: DMA software won't start. Other errors are in DMA error messages.
