DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION: what it means and the fix

A blue screen with stop code 0xE6 on a PC with a DMA card. What it means, how to check if the card is the cause, and what to send us.

DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION is a Windows blue screen with stop code 0xE6. It's about how a driver or device uses direct memory access. It isn't named after DMA cards, and most of the causes Microsoft lists are driver bugs. But one of them is the IOMMU catching a device, so with a DMA card in your main PC, don't ignore it.

Check if it's the card

If the blue screen still happens, it's not the card. Look at your drivers and recent Windows updates instead. If it stops, the card is involved.

If it's the card

Don't turn BIOS security settings off to make it stop unless we tell you to. Main PC will not boot covers the other ways a main PC can act up with the card in. Other errors are in DMA error messages.
