DMA memory map (mmap.txt): what it is and when you need one
A memory map is a list of where your main PC's RAM actually sits. Your DMA software needs it to know which addresses are real memory. It normally works it out on its own, so most people never make one. You only need a memory map file when the software can't find it by itself.
What it does
Your main PC's memory isn't one clean block. Parts of the address range belong to the graphics card, the BIOS and other devices. The memory map says which ranges are real RAM. You can see it when the MewTools speed test prints Retrieving Physical Memory Map and then a list of ranges.
Without a correct map, the software has to guess. Reads that land outside real memory fail or stall, and on some PCs they can leave the card stuck until you cold boot.
When you need one
Only if something is wrong. If your software connects and ESP shows, leave it alone.
- Slow loading, or the software drops its connection.
- ESP or aim doesn't show, even though the speed test passes.
- "Unable to locate valid DTB".
- "Failed to find base address".
- "Failed to retrieve Physical Memory Map".
Before you make one, cold boot the main PC and restart the second PC. A stuck card gives the same errors. If the speed test fails, fix that first with Low DMA speed. A memory map won't fix a bad cable.
Making mmap.txt for Blurred
Blurred, the software we suggest, reads a file called mmap.txt from its own folder. Blurred's memory map guide has the exact steps and the page that converts the file. In short:
Good to know. Windows hides file extensions, so a file you name mmap.txt can end up as mmap.txt.txt and get ignored. In File Explorer, open View and turn on File name extensions to check.
Other software
Every software handles this its own way, so check its guide first. Most DMA software is built on LeechCore, which can load a map file you give it. MemProcFS can also save the map it found after one good run, as physmemmap.txt in its sys\memmap folder, and you can reuse that file. Letting LeechCore guess the map with -memmap auto is a last resort. Its own maker says it often fails.
When to make a new one
The map changes when the main PC's memory layout does. Make a new one after:
Still not working
Don't turn BIOS settings off to fix a map error unless we tell you to. Our firmware only needs Fast Boot off, and BIOS security settings says why the rest stays on. If the map is made and the error stays, ask Blurred in their Discord first, since it's their software. If they say it's the card or the firmware, open a ticket in our Discord and tell us what they said.
No account needed. It tells us what to write more of.
